IMIC at KUTRRH: Advancing Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment
Cancer continues to be one of the leading health concerns globally and in Kenya. In response to the growing burden, Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH) began its cancer care journey in 2019, achieving its first certification as a cancer center that same year. This marked the beginning of a commitment to providing quality, patient-centered cancer care.
As part of this commitment, the hospital established the Integrated Molecular Imaging Centre (IMIC) — a specialized unit designed to enhance early cancer diagnosis, precise staging, and treatment planning through advanced imaging and molecular diagnostics.
On February 4th, 2025, during World Cancer Day, KUTRRH received its annual certificate renewal from the International Cancer Institute (ICI) after meeting the minimum standards of a cancer center through continuous and surprise inspections. These standards include having:
- Qualified staff such as clinical oncologists, gynecological oncologists, oncology nurses, nutritionists, palliative care specialists, and physiotherapists.
- State-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment equipment.
- Fully functional ICU and HDU units.
Today, KUTRRH is recognized as a Comprehensive Cancer Centre, with IMIC playing a central role in:
- Providing radiography, MRI, CT scans, ultrasounds, and mammograms
- Supporting accurate diagnosis and cancer staging
- Facilitating treatment through surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy
- Supporting research collaborations with both local and international partners to enhance innovation in cancer care.
Why IMIC and Certification Matter
- Quality Assurance
IMIC is a core part of KUTRRH’s infrastructure that ensures the hospital meets the highest international standards in cancer care, particularly in diagnostics and imaging. - Advanced Technology and Specialized Staff
The IMIC is equipped with cutting-edge diagnostic technology and staffed with experts trained in molecular imaging, enabling early detection and targeted treatment plans. - Multidisciplinary Care
IMIC supports the hospital’s holistic approach by integrating imaging results with clinical, emotional, and social care pathways for cancer patients. - Referral Hub for Complex Cases
Patients from other hospitals are referred to KUTRRH for advanced diagnostics via IMIC, especially for difficult cases needing further staging, molecular analysis, or treatment planning. - Public Trust and Patient Confidence
Certification and the presence of a highly specialized center like IMIC reassures patients and families that they are receiving the highest quality of care available in the country.
