How to access PET/CT service in the region
As part of the comprehensive strategies for cancer prevention and control and Universal Health Coverage framework, Kenya established a state-of-the-art cancer care imaging facility at Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral & Research Hospital – Integrated Molecular Imaging Centre (IMIC) with a multi-disciplinary team to perform Nuclear Medicine Imaging and treatment services at global standards. As the 1st ever public Nuclear Medicine facility in the larger Sub-Saharan region, more people will now have access to accurate staging and diagnosis of cancer using PET-CT. In addition, the centre provides SPECT Imaging for a range of medical conditions.
Patient Preparation For PET/CT Scans.
- Do not eat at least 6 hours before the procedure – allowed to
take only pure water* - Avoid exercising for 24 hours before the scan
- A controlled diet for 12- 24 hours before the scan, especially if the patient has diabetes
- For the FDG PET/CT scan, a blood glucose check will be
performed before the test. Make sure to notify if you havediabetes. - For PSMA PET scans, there is no need to fast before the pro-
cedure.
*The above preparation is only ap- plicable to FDG PET scans*
For residents using NHIF, pre-au-thorization is done at Kenyatta Uni-
versity Teaching, Referral & Research hospital provided a patient premiums are upto date.

- International patients receive scan report same day.
Within the specialized clinics, we have an outpatient oncology unit where you can book for follow-up treatment clinics (chemotherapy, radiotherapy, brachytherapy) cyberknife – soon to be launched) and surgery.
