Clinical Application of SPECT-CT in Kenya

SPECT /CT is considered a highly hybrid technology in nuclear medicine. Introduction of the digital SPECT/CT at Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral & Research Hospital (KUTRRH), IMIC has seen a great deal of success in the progress towards achieving universal health coverage (UHC) efforts.

The superiority of SPECT/CT scan as an imaging tool has been demonstrated in many examinations beyond cancer management. These examinations include:

  • Bone scans : Cancer that may have spread to bone or non-cancerous conditions like osteomyelitis
  • MAG3 / DTPA for patients with kidney diseases
  • VIQ scans for people suspected of having pulmonary embolism
  • HMPAO for brain imaging
  • Thyroid scans for thyroid cancer, graves' disease and hyperthyroidism
  • Mebrofenin for hepatobiliary imaging of the biliary system
  • MPI & MUGA for cardiovascular diseases among other diseases

The above scans are conducted at the Integrated Molecular Imaging Centre (IMIC) with the support of a multi-disciplinary team.
